Chief Operating Officer meets the President of Nepal

Steve Denne the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Heifer International is on his first visit to Asia and the South Pacific. In Nepal, his second destination amongst Cambodia, India and Viet-Nam, the COO had the opportunity to pay a visit to the president of Nepal, Honorable President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav. Meeting at his residence in Kathmandu, the capital city on 13 April 2010, the president said, “There is a lot of work to be done in Nepal. We are still in a state of a political uncertainty. But for organizations like Heifer who work for the people without any political preferences and discriminations, the current situation should not be a problem. I think your organization should focus more on the conflict ridden areas in the southern terai belts. Those areas are in need of program that helps the people lead better lives and contributes to improving the social cohesion, like Heifer does.”

After the people’s movement in April 2006 following the 10 year civil war lead by the Maoists, Nepal ousted the monarchy that had ruled the country for 240 years. The President, as the head of the state is leading the current legislature in drafting the new constitution. The nation hopes that the constitution will take it in a new direction. Heifer has been working in Nepal for the past 16 years, building self-reliant and sustainable communities. As a budding people’s republic amidst world superpowers, Nepal needs to take to a similar direction of sustainability and self-reliance. The COO reiterated Heifer’s commitment to helping Nepal and it people.

Heifer also has projects in the President’s ancestral village of Saphari, in the eastern district of Dhanusa. The Executive Vice President of Asia and the South Pacific Programs, Mahendra Lohani and the Country Director of Heifer Nepal, Dr. Shubh N. Mahato was also present in the meeting.
